The Crying Clown - 4

  1. THE CRYING CLOWN: 4 - A black ink and black pencil drawing on a 11 x 14 size coquille board. It was originally scheduled to appear in a book titled, "The Crying Clown Celebration," by John F. Carr, but it was published in 2013 as, "A Certain Flair For Death".

Usually, when I'm in the final inking and shading stage of a drawing my mind often wanders a bit while I'm finishing the drawing. In the story I was illustrating here, the lady is imagining herself to be the famous Russian ballet dancer, "Pavlova".

While inking the drawing I started to think about how common that sort of thing is, practically everyone who ever lived has at some time or other pretended to be someone they admired. When I was a kid playing baseball with other kids in the neighborhood, I used to pretend I was Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox. Even though I was a Yankee fan! And though I was right-handed, I switched over and learned to bat left-handed, like Ted.

When football season came I pretended I was Glen Davis, the star running back at West Point. If by chance I was chosen to be the quarterback, I pretended to be Johnny Lujack of Notre Dame. And, if we played cowboys and Indians, I was The Lone Ranger.

So, who were you when you were a kid?
